Hi Manoj,
As a fellow math teacher, I know you care deeply about your students and seeing them succeed. And that means equipping them with all the tools they need to tackle any math challenge!
This is obviously easier said than done, but one thing that can help is teaching and practicing problem solving strategies.
One of the things I talk about often (and cover in one of my online professional development courses) is teaching math through problem solving.
But as a quick aside, teaching problem solving strategies is not the same as teaching through problem solving.
Teaching THROUGH problem solving means allowing kids to learn math by doing math, tackling meaningful tasks, open-ended challenges, and making observations and discovering patterns and generalizations.
Teaching ABOUT problem solving means learning specific strategies that make solving problems easier, and/or more efficient.
Both are great and (I believe) have their place in the math classroom.
But today I want to focus specifically on those math problem solving strategies that can help students tackle problems one step at a time, rather than getting overwhelmed and shutting down.
I'm sure there are other strategies that could join this list, but you can use the links below to learn more about each one and see some example problems that lend themselves well to each strategy.
6. Make a Table & Find a Pattern
My personal favorites are drawing a picture (which usually consists of a bar model or number line) and solving an easier problem first.
But all of the strategies above are useful at times, so I hope it gives you some good ideas for equipping your students, especially as we head into test prep season.
And if you have another strategy to add to this list, hit reply and share it with me! :)
Blessings,
