Not-So-Scary *Halloween* Math Ideas

Hi Manoj, Halloween is not really something we make a big deal of at my house ( but I do love candy corn, so I'll take any excuse to grab a bag! ) . And I do have a few fun activities that you might enjoy to make math more fun and engaging for your students, especially if your kids tend to be a little ahem wild and crazy this time of year ( so.much.sugar! ). Helping Kids with Word Problems {Free Resources}

Hi Manoj! Do your kids struggle with solving word problems? Are they easily overwhelmed? Or maybe they just pluck out all the numbers and calculate without thinking. Either way, we want to be intentional about helping them use logical reasoning to think about the situation of a word problem, rather than feeling overwhelmed or rushing to get an answer down. So today I want to share a post which explains the problem with relying on keywords and how to help kids slow down and reason through a word problem. Finding & Filling Math Gaps

Hi there Manoj, , When I taught Algebra 1 to ninth graders, I had a hugely diverse group of students. There were kids who knew exactly what was going on and were way ahead of us. Then there were kids who were so far behind because they never mastered basic math in middle school, but were moved along anyway. And of course, everything in between. But my district made it abundantly clear that I was to teach the Algebra 1 standards. All of them . This meant pushing ahead even when so many kids were getting left behind. To try and teach what was required and still help the kids with huge gaps in their math knowledge, I would often put kids into small groups. This would allow some kids to work on enrichment challenges, others to practice current skills and then a small group to work with me, reteaching concepts to try and fill in the gaps. This was difficult, but whether the school district acknowledged it or not , I knew that my students would not be able to master Algebra

Resources to Make Sense of Percents

Hi Manoj, When I taught 9th grade, the assumption of the curriculum was that students had a solid knowledge and foundation of percents. What they were, how they related to fractions and decimals, and how they applied to real life. Unfortunately, that was not the reality for my students. As I tried to teach them important life skills involving percents (discounts, tax, tip, etc.) they struggled. And I struggled as a result, because I didn't have time to go back and re-teach things they were supposed to be comfortable with already! If students don't have a solid understanding of percents, it won't even help to hand them a calculator because they won't know how to punch in the calculations.
