Earlier this month I talked a bit about ways to build fraction sense and deep understanding in your students.
Hopefully you found some helpful resources to make sense of fractions, but if you're looking for a more long-term strategy that will help you provide consistent exposure to fractions & fraction operations, then I hope you'll join us for our very first Math Geek Mama+ Workshop.
In this workshop, we'll be talking about the how and why of number talks and strategic ways you can use just 10 minutes a day to explore & discuss fractions with your students.
If you teach grades 5-8, you know how big a challenge fractions can be for students.
At that point, they should have a solid foundation for understanding fractions so they can build on that to more challenging concepts (add/subtract mixed numbers, divide fractions, convert fractions to decimals and percentages, etc.).
The only problem?
Too many students still don't understand those key, underlying concepts. So you're trying to build on a shaky foundation!
And so we're going to talk about those challenges, what foundational understandings students should have and then map out ideas for fraction number talks that you can take back to your classroom.
This is going to be a packed hour of learning and sharing ideas together so we can help students grow in fraction confidence.
